Who is Doug the Gardener?
We are your friendly local Wānaka gardeners! We’re family-owned and operated, professional, qualified and experienced with local gardens of all sizes.
After living in Wānaka for six years, Doug and Hannah set up their own gardening business in 2017. They combine a long-standing English gardening pedigree with expert knowledge of the quirks of gardening in an alpine desert!
Originally from England, Doug grew up gardening with his Mum, who is also an award-winning gardener. He studied with the Royal Horticulture Society and Bath University and has a background in sustainable landscape design and use, and organic horticulture - plus numerous further NZ-based gardening and horticulture qualifications. But most of all, he has a passion for green spaces large and small! He brings a huge range of gardening experience, from micro gardens to huge subdivision projects, so you can rest easy knowing your garden is in great hands.
Doug’s partner Hannah takes care of the business side of things, bringing expertise in business strategy, development and HR. We pride ourselves on treating our staff well to guarantee a quality service, and making it easy for them to settle in the local area to ensure consistency for you and your garden. We offer some great incentives, including apprenticeship opportunities and weekly yoga classes.
Experienced gardeners who care about your property
All of our team leaders and gardeners are highly trained and experienced with a professional attitude, and, of course, a passion for gardens.
Our skill-set includes all aspects of garden maintenance, including lawn mowing, hedge trimming, shrub trimming, seasonal plant care, tree care and pruning.
We are trained horticulturalists and can source a huge range of plants, and connect you to local and national nurseries for specialist plants. We try to keep chemical usage to a minimum with our expertise in horticulture and climate-appropriate planting. We’re also experienced in managing the many makes and types of irrigation systems used in Wānaka gardens, including maintaining and fixing any minor repairs, prepping them for winter and restarting and testing systems once early summer arrives.

Top-of-the-line equipment
We come with a range of high-spec equipment, from professional lawn coring aerators and ride-on mowers through to trucks and tipping trailers. Our equipment pool gives us the scope to have 5 or 10 gardeners working on your site at once, so we can carry out large-scale jobs efficiently and cost-effectively.
